Who is The Mighty God of the Old Testament?

A Scriptural Exegesis of the Mighty God of Isaiah 9:6

In a conversation with a member of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society (Jehovah’s Witness - JW) I was told, according the WT theology, that Jesus was ‘a mighty God’ and not ‘Almighty God.’ The JW quickly fired off a quick passage in John 1:1 which reads in the New World Translation (NWT-1984) that Christ is ‘a god.’

During the bible verse machine gun approach I began to surmise that JW’s are masterful at plotting a course through the bible using the warm winds of misapplied Greek wording, slivers of cherry-picked verses, and even a text with unjustified alterations. It was as though the JW was running through an enemy mine field already knowing where the mines were.

One passage that seemed to have struck a chord with the dear soul at my doorstep was Isaiah 9:6. This passage reads:

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

Quickly the JW attempted to circumvent the power of this passage by guiding me into his NWT rendering of John 1:1 which identifies Christ as ‘a god.’

Nehemiah 9:27-33

Habakkuk 1:12-13

The passage in Habakkuk is quite interesting as it says “Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One?…” Habakkuk identifies the Holy One as “O LORD my God” while concluding the statement by with “;and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.”

Branching off briefly from the original premise of the ’Mighty God’ and for additional text we can learn more about who the mighty God by gathering text concerning the term ’Holy One‘, which is used in direct relation to the ‘mighty God’ in the passage of Habakkuk 1:12-13.

21 This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.22 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 10:16-23

Just 36 verses earlier in Isaiah in chapter nine verse six we find exactly who this mighty God is. The mighty God is none other than the person revealed in the flesh 2000 years ago who is called Jesus the Christ.

24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?25 But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

In an overwhelming number scriptural passages we find that The Lord God Almighty is referred to as Mighty God and the biblical text exonerates itself in the matter.

Trusting the word of God results in a total rejection of the doctrine of men and Satan. Do not let anyone tell you what the Word of God means outside of the writings of the Word of God. The Holy Spirit will teach us truth and will never contradict the word of God. Submit to His word and lean on God’s word because God is greater than our hearts and even our own human understanding.
When you are approached by someone who meshes together ‘a god’ and Mighty God’ as if it is goes together like bread and butter immediately stop the butter knife in its reckless pursuit. Address the issue front and center with the power of God’s word.

In order for the truth of God’s word to permeate into the minds of those we are trying to help pull from the fire we need to expose all lies by using the word of God to defend the word of God. Not our opinion, not our conjecture, not our own understanding, not our feelings, but God’s word.

The next time you hear the argument from a Jehovah’s Witness that Jesus is referred to as ’a mighty god’ in the Old Testament-- call them out on it. Be patient and prove the argument with the word of God.
We can confidently say “Lord Jesus, you are the mighty God!“ Passages within Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah, Psalms, Habakkuk, and others offer irrefutable support of Christ being the mighty God of the Old Testament which concur with the words of Isaiah when he says:

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
